The S.S. Turtle Bollard Can Save Turtle Lives
According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Sea Turtle populations have experienced massive Worldwide declines. These declines may only be reversed by managing the effects of human populations on our shorelines.
Sea Turtles have been nesting on our ocean beaches for millions of years. In the past, hatchlings were drawn toward the moonlight and stars directed off the surface of the ocean water. Now the light emitted by human-made developments directly beyond the beach is often much stronger and hatchlings instinctively crawl towards it and away from the sea. This results in literally thousands of dehydrated and dying hatchlings.
To minimize or even eliminate the impact this light pollution might have on sea turtle hatchlings, Millerbernd Lighting designed the “S.S. Turtle”, a non-corrosive stainless steel bollard with low-emitting amber LEDs, which meets the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s the Wildlife Lighting Certification requirements.
The Wildlife Lighting Certification Program is designed to educate the members of the public, the building industry, and government officials how to minimize adverse impacts on wildlife by using proper lighting methods and technologies. Millerbernd’s “Turtle-Friendly” solution not only met these strict regulatory requirements, but the “S.S. Turtle” Bollard actually enhances the coastal areas they are installed, while helping to address this important environmental need.
